Lyrics: The Idea Of You (08.01.06)

Special thanks to Matt and Darla for getting these started.

I'm sitting on my front steps again
Wishing why this is the way it is
I was waiting for you and my friends
To show up here and laugh with me
I know you saw, oh look at that strange man
Staring down at you
Oh but this has got me feeling like a kid
So I'm not gonna pull your hair

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
It's why with you I can say what I mean
Wanna stay but I think I'm getting out of here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

You look at me, you laugh
Though I don't know what to say
So I just wait and hope that you pass
That you look back at me again
Lost hope, this old man
Staring at this little kid
Oh gosh, you told me yourself
But I'm not gonna pull your hair

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
It's why with you I can say what I mean
Wanna stay but I think I'm getting out of here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

This bus stop
Daydream
I'm having
Is wrong I know
But brothers
And sisters
You gotta get love
You gotta let it grow
And only when it's wrong
It feels right
And sometimes the other way
Baby, God, ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I saw, yeah

I fall so hard inside the idea of you
It's why with you I can say what I mean
Wanna stay but I think I'm getting out of here
I fall so hard inside the idea of you

Yeah

I have the lyrics to the 8-6 version how do I send them to you? I keep looking for a contact email but I can't find it?

I am beginning to think the whole "old man" and "young thing" and "little kid" in each version is a type of metaphor for the DISTANCE between the two of them because he keeps waiting for her. Some of the lyrics make it seem she is closer than other she is further away.

The 8-6 version has become a close second favorite to me. Like the first version, 8-6 is very tight lyrics and sound. The Idea of You on 6-2 is still my favortie .

    "Lost hope", this old man
    Staring at this little kid
Oh gosh, "you told me yourself"
But I'm not gonna pull your hair

This song has become so intriguing with the storyline. Look at the lyrics of the some of the July versions where apparently the person has told him they love him ~ "this thought you love me" and in the other version "you love me, you love me"

Sorry ~ my bad I mean the 8-5 version.

Well, it's pretty obvious what this song is about… but I won't get into that here. There's already been enough trouble started on the major forums about this.

Can you please update your Lyrics section with links to the last several IOY lyrics?

No it is not obvious. Music and art are never obvious. Like any song it should be left to the ears of the beholder. My interpretation is defdinitely different from yours. If that is your intrepretation of the lyrics than so be it. Music and art are not to be objective but subjective.

  7. 7 guy

    True, music is subjective.

But there are lyrics in this song that seriously point to a specific theme. I think some songs are open to interpretation more than others… and Dave seems pretty direct with these "freestyled" lyrics.

BTW, isn't it amazing how he comes up with this stuff on-the-fly?

  8. 8 ally

"But there are lyrics in this song that seriously point to a specific theme" In your opinion!

Just as your interpretation of the song -my theme definitely different than yours. To me the theme is one of being in love with someone from a distance. All these feelings are one of being comparable to when he was young but now feeling old and seeing this person who is more lively and youthful and full of love. The other interpretation I have with the young and old is being the distance between the two fo them.

My take is that, it's about "this busstop day dream" about the perfect person. That perhaps they're more in love with the idea of the person rather than the actuality. Who knows, hopefully it'll make it to the next studio cut and we can debate from there..

But how do you explain lyrics like "Wish I could clean out my head", "I should not think the way I'm thinking", "I'm glad you can't read what's inside my head", "It's wrong I know", "If you knew what I was thinking, would you wash out the inside of my head."… etc. I mean, if you put all of these versions together I think you get a pretty clear picture of what this song's about.

  11. 11 guy

    Did I forget:

"It's not proper what I'm thinking"
"Wish i could stop this thinking, wrongful thinking"
"Oh a little girl… I wish we lived long, long ago, so I'd get away with loving you this much."
"This old man staring at this little kid."

… I mean, there are more than this. And he's probably going to sing another 20 versions before this tour is over with even more lyrics like this.

He is thinking/fantasizing of having this person every which way and is kinda embarrassed by the thoughts. Maybe he is thinking of someone other than his significant other ("I know it's wrong" "not proper" of thinking or falling hard into the idea of having someone other than his significant other) I still think the usage of little, young, kid are what this person seems to him because of their energy and youthfulness polar to him because of his middle age feeling old and tied down. This person make him wish he could feel like that again. The other interpretation I see within the various songs of old and young are the distance between them. I don't think you have the right to force that idea on me. That is your opinion and yours to share but not to tell me a it is a "clear picture of what this song is about" because I don't see it. It is a sweet song about love and how this person makes him feel. I definitely more of a romantic than you.

  13. 13 guy

    Who's "forcing" anything here?

Everyone should believe what they want about this song. I just think that, personally, some people are shutting out certain interpretations altogether (despite clearly-stated lyrics) simply because they might be controversial.

ever think this song could be about what it sounds its about — he's got a cruch on a younger girl that he does not know too well — that's basically the jist (sp?) of it, right …

    – the evolving lyrics indicate these ideas are coming from deep within, from a personal place — they also, devalue to a certain extant the tiny specifics of the lyrics that people seem to be harping on — if he is coming up w/ these lyrics as he goes, you can interpret them based on specifics, but on the general idea, on the idea of the idea of you

I'm going to wait until it is actually released on a album, at that point in true Dave fashion they lyrics should be complete….but until then, he'll sing it a bizillion different ways. Other than what has been illuded too, my "other" interpertation is along the same lines as Ally's.

  16. 16 Vici

I think possibly it's the flip side to Grey Street…..from a man's perspective.

Ok, let me get my own name right….

My birthday was on July 2nd, 2006 at the Alpine Valley show, and because of this my head was not fully clear, BUT, I thought FOR SURE I heard Dave say "This here's a maternity song" right before he played The Idea Of You. Now I very well could be wrong, and I could have just wanted him to say that because I was there with my pregnant best friend(fate?) and it was my goddaughter's first DMB concert(in the womb) and that song is now and forever will be "our song", but I'd like to see if anyone else out there could confirm or deny this. I know the lyrics don't really add up to that meaning, but hey, it's worth a shot to find out! I now sing my goddaughter to sleep with it. =) Thanks friends!
