    Shotgun – Matt's Take

    What has become of us?
Chasing me out of (there) again
    The lessons lost on us
    Maybe we should go dancing
    What has become of us?
    She everyone of us
Chasing me out of (there) again
    Maybe we should go dancin'
    What has become of us?
    Split planes and hurricanes
That looms from a child's hands
    There she go dancin'

    Shotgun
One for each of us here
Like Romeo and Juliet, we are
A bottle for each of us here
    Forsaken by the rose
    Assault
    *muttering in background* yea…awe…yea
    Shotgun
    Maybe I'm to blame
You blame me for your life
    *scats on awe and yeah*
    Shotgun

    What has become of us?
    But happiness again
    Trouble, yes we can save
    Momma, we should go dancin'
    What has become of us?
    Lessons, lessons (awe, awe, oh)
    Life, Life, she
    Maybe we should go dance

    Shotgun
You put it in your mouth
    Try to blame me
For your life heading south (oh)
    Trigger happy girl
You know there's no way back to here now
    You did
    Come on *scats* (yeah…..awe, yeah)
    *scats on ohhh…yea..*

    What has become of us?
Lessons lost with you and I
    The higher just struck me
    Maybe we should go dance

I know this is not entirely accurate…but I did the best I could while watching the Georgia Tech/Notre Dame Game. However I must add..that this song again has no flow. Musically yes, lyrically they're about two entirely different things. This has a lot of work vocally and in terms of production wise before it's ready for studio work.

I tend to disagree that the song has no flow. Maybe this has already been said, but it seems to me that we're dealing with a couple who have fallen apart, wondering "what has become of us," wondering if there's still a way to save themselves (maybe they should go dancing) but there's really no way back. so the girl puts the shotgun in her mouth and blames him for everything that's gone wrong for her "life heading south" and maybe he is to blame, after all. the narrator wonders again, at the end, if maybe there's a way to save them. maybe they should go dancing…

from this perspective–which fist both of the recent versions of the song—it seems to be exceptionally powerful.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Dancing will save them? Give me a break. I mean if the music is supposed to correlate to the lyrics I think they both do that just fine. But he needs to find a way to rewrite the chorus. Dave is trying to combine the two songs into one…and it's working a little bit, but he's got a long way to go before I even remotely sold on buying this one.

I don't think he literally means a night of dancing will save a marriage- it is more likely a metaphor for being carefree…

  6. 6 Matt

And as I've said before…I think the "shotgun" is a metaphor as well. I dunno, love the tune, lyrics need a bunch of work for me…he doesn't know where he wants to go with this one. Kind of like the beginning up to the what is it now…26th version of the Idea of you? That's my pet peeve with dave, trust me I'm a dave head…have all of his albums, and about 30 unreleased lives…but the man…just has to sit down, decide how the song is goign to go, write lyrics and be done with it. So that we don't have to argue on internet blogs like this. lol.

I also love the song. I mean, there comes a time when, if you blow it, it will mean a lot more than a bad dance, and may mean WHAT WILL BECOME OF YOU, and may also make you think if you had just danced a bit more, well who knows, eh? Clearly metaphor on personal as well as community national level. I appreciate the seriousness of the lyrics. I believe Dave is just writing his way through the summer, which may or may not work with shotgun and/or IOY. Sometimes overwriting is a bad thing But keep writing DMB, just keep writing, please please.

you're reading waaaaay too much into a song where half the lyrics are being made up on the spot. i guarantee you that this song won't even make it to the b-side of the new album, (though the IOY, BF and KTK porbably will). dont be wasting your time on something as trivial as this

Matt, I'm glad that my post was the dumbest thing you ever heard. Really. But the fact is, it isn't meant to mean going dancing will actually save them, but if you actually look at the actual lyrics that you, yourself, jotted down, you'll see that he's saying "what has become of us?" and then "maybe we should go dancing." the idea is trying to recapture the innocence of happier times, maybe there's a way to bring all that back. there are two forces at work in this song, the END OF THE ROAD, which is the shotgun part, the person putting it in their mouth and blaming the other person for everything that's gone wrong and the MAYBE THERE'S A WAY BACK part, the part where someone asks how it ever came to this and if there's a way to turn back the clock. it's one of the best of the new songs, if not the best. i don't think dave is lacking direction here, i think he knows exactly what this song is about.
