Willie Nelson's Gravedigger Cover
Published by Martin January 13th, 2008 at 11:39 pm in NewsIn the comments to another post, Matt pointed me to Willie Nelson's cover of Gravedigger, which appears on his new album Moment of Forever. The music itself stays true to the Some Devil version of Gravedigger, but the lyrics have a different rhythm. I like it a lot, and I think Willie's video fits the song better than Dave's version.
The album comes out on January 29th, but the video is available on Amazon and the song itself is
available on iTunes.

i also liked this song…its a bit different but i think he does a great job
I love Willie, and of course I love Dave, so this cover did not let me down. Willie's take on it was different but he captured it well. Enjoy
Thanks for posting this Martin…apparently he's doing other covers in Moment for Forever, I think it'll go well for Willie.
Sounded like Willie was "mailing it in" to me. Sounds like he doesn't even like the song, but knew he needed to cover something popular to sell some records. It's almost like he's making fun of the song.
it's a horrible version of gravedigger. he sounds ridiculous trying to sing it. Dave should stop Willie before he covers more of his songs. it just flat out wasn't good at all.
I appreciate what Willie was trying to do, and the song does get better as it goes along, but it's still a pretty poorly executed cover. It is a testament to Dave's music that someone of Willie's stature would cover one of his songs, though.
Oh man…when I first heard this was coming, I got a bit nervous. I do realize that Dave and Willie have the whole Farm Aid relationship going on, but this…? When I first heard Willie's version, I nearly laughed milk out of my nose. Not only did it sound like a horrid karaoke version of a great song, but I also agree with the preivious poster's comment about Willie "mailing this one in." So true…Iwould avoid this one like the plague!
On a side note and since this is the most recent thread - I'm posting it here. If you listen to the 2005 versions of "Hello Again"…the intros are basically what #27 is based off of. Lyrics basis included. I only realized this because I was playing guitar…and that opening lick is the intro to #27. Redundant post, but I was excited.
