R.I.P. Leroi Moore

It pains me greatly to post this, but I just learned that Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Leroi Moore passed away today. The news came via the band's official site:

We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

Leroi had been with the band since its inception in 1991. I will miss him tremendously and there is no doubt that he will be missed greatly by the band, the crew and the entire DMB community.

Jeff Coffin has been filling in for Leroi since his accident in late June. Leroi's final show was at the Nissan Pavilion at Stone Ridge in Bristow, Virginia on June 28, 2008. If anyone would like a copy of the show, let me know and I will provide you with a copy or tell you where you can get one.

I honestly can't believe it still happened. dmb has been a part of my life for 12 yrs now….so not having leroi around is like a part of that life is missing. I'm deeply saddened. :-(

I am also terribly saddened. Leroi was responsible for melting coinciding harmonies together. It was because of him that DMB's melodies were so rich and layered. This is of course in addition to his many remarkful, unforgettable solos. We will miss you Leroi.

I am also saddened because I was unable to attend a show this year for the first time in eight years. I scheduled to move the day of the local concert, and I am very disappointed that it did not get to see the favorite band of my youth play one more time. As a keepsake, I would like to get a recording of the last show, so if you could direct me to it I would be grateful.
    RIP Leroi

I know I'm still in shock. I can't believe he's gone. I didn't feel well about the news a month ago when he had complications. Like a gut feeling. I was lucky enough to see his last show. I actually took video of that show and you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DMB Parrotisla 6/28/08&search_type=&aq=f

RIP Leroi you'll be missed by everyone in the DMB community. Your musical skills were incredible.

This news just hits like a house falling on me like I lost a family member. I have been really concerned for his health since this happened and there was not much news. Music is such an important part of my life and the void left by LeRoi is going to hurt for a long, long time.

Martin I would sincerely appreciate a source for a download of the last show.

    Rest, brother, rest.

If I go before I’m old
Oh brother of mine please don’t forget me if I go
Bartender please, fill my glass for me
With the wine you gave Jesus that set him free
after three days in the ground

What a sad, sad day. How can we get a copy of that last show?? Please let us know.

It is like trying to swallow a big rock. I still can't define what this means to me, but it's been incredibly touching.

I don't know, but besides Roi's last show with the band, I thinks it would be more than great to get a taping of yesterday's show at the Staples Center. As far as I have read in many sites, the entire performance was deeply emotional, particularly that of Bartender as an opener, and the reaction of the crowd after Dave told them LeRoi had passed away.

I'm blank now. This has been even more powerful than my grandfather death some years ago. For a second I thought of Dave changing the lyrics to Gravedigger's last verse to something like this:

"LeRoi Moore nineteen sixty-one to two thousand and eight,
he played his sax like the devil until the day he left.
When we grow old we're going to meet you down the road that takes us all home, my friend
the sound of your music remains in our veins"

    I don't know. I don't know.

Greets from Santiago de Chile. And long live the memory of LeRoi Moore.

This is truly a sad, sad day. Being from VA myself, I had the privilege of hearing about a "pretty good band from UVA" a long, long time ago. I have been listening ever since. If you could please let me know how I could get a copy of LeRoi's last show, that would be awesome.

This is truly a sad day for DMB and its fans. LeRoi was an immense talent and has left us too soon. I remember fearing the worst when he got into his accident but then breathed a sigh of relief when all reports pointed to him making a complete, if not slow, recovery. The news yesterday hit me like a train, totally blindsiding me. All us fans can do now is remember the amazing solos LeRoi used to bust out at every show and remember the dynamic he brought to the band. Where the band goes from here on out is anyone's guess, although it would be sad if they broke up any one of us couldn't blame them after losing such an important piece like LeRoi.

Rest in Peace, my good man. Your music will live on forever.

Martin, if you could please provide LeRoi's last show in MP3 format to me and and everyone else that would be greatly appreciated.

This is very sad news. Sometimes it feels like its not real, a dream that I'll wake up from. But alas, the world has lost one of the greatest saxophone players of our time. I wish the best to LeRoi's family and DMB.

I would also really love to get a copy of LeRoi's last show. Thanks for your offer.

If I go before I’m old
Oh brother of mine please don’t forget me if I go

Oh and if I die before my time
Oh sweet sister of mine please don’t regret me if I go

    RIP, you will be missed.

Life really is short but sweet for certain!

do u think by chance you could get the other shows going as well — i'm completetly comp illit & can only get downloads fr here — missin my dave — maybe get some of the spirit back

  13. 13 David

I was so stunned about his passing. i had been actively checking the DMB website for news about his condition and still can't believe he's gone. He was such a great musician and amazing part of this band. this only leaves the question out there for what the future holds for their new album and DMB in general. if you could let me know how to get a copy of his final show, I'd love to have that memory.

To think that some people always associated LeRoi as just the guy in the background is a frustrating thought, but without him DMB wouldn't quite have the same soul as it always has. And quite frankly, I don't know what we'll ever do without him. I can relate to the others who feel like they've lost a family member, and he'll be dearly missed by every fan and every person who's lives has been touched by DMB's music. If I could get a copy of the Bristow show, I'd be really grateful.

    Thanks so much

    -Emily

I'm still having trouble believing that LeRoi is gone. Words can't describe how tremendous this loss really is. Hopefully you could send me his last show, it would be greatly aprreciated.

    Rest in Peace Roi.

i love your site and what you provide for the community, are you posting the last show or how can i get a copy of it

    thank you so much

I'm still trying to digest it days later… LeRoi was such an integral part of the DMB "sound." I was lucky enough to be at Roi's last concert, and of course, it now becomes my favorite but for all the wrong reasons. LeRoi has been a part of my life for 15 years and its hard to swallow the thought that his sound won't be heard in future concerts and on future discs. However, I know that Roi is making sweet music wherever he is, and that his audience is certainly lucky. Just goes to show that life truly is short, but sweet, for certain.

I'd LOVE to have a copy of the Nissan concert. Being there was amazing but given this unfortunate situation, I'd love to have it to remember such a great night with a great band, together for the last time.

I know we're all in mourning over Roi…and I've not posted my thoughts yet, but will….but in a selfish way, can you keep posting the clips from the shows that have happened thus far…almost a month behind :(
